EDU 235 ePortfolio Work

Hello! My name is Danielle Nickerson. I am currently a freshman at Southern New Hampshire University. My major is elementary education, with a certification in special education as well. I have always known I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was a young girl. A video is coming soon!!

My Vision

Technology is rapidly changing and growing. There is no way on settling with one version of technology because a new piece of technology is constantly coming on the market. Children see technology in their everyday lives. Computers, Laptops, iPhones, iPads, iPods, tablets, etc. Any type of technology out there for learning, socializing, or anything, is constantly in children’s lives.

Here are just some of the Apple devices used in the world of technology today.

I feel as though technology can be both a blessing and a curse. If technology is being used in the classroom, it needs to be used to the highest potential. Outdated technology isn’t helping students excel in the quickly growing technology world today. One major problem that comes with trying to keep technology up to date is the funding. Technology is constantly changing, and it comes with a price. Funding can be difficult to receive, and I feel as though this is probably one of the top problems that comes with integrating technology in the classroom. Another problem can be teachers. Some teachers are not technology savvy. Students seem to be more easily adaptable and more knowledgeable of technology than the teachers! I believe that if a school is able to provide the proper technology for the students, and teacher training in technology, it’s a great way to incorporate technology in the classroom. Another idea I have is to constantly have an IT worker on hand to fix technology needs. We can’t always guarantee technology is going to work, therefore when it happens

IPads in the classroom are currently on the rise. Many school districts are now offering iPads to each student to carry amongst their classes, and use as a note taker, eBook, etc. Students have the ability to download apps that can help them with learning certain content in the curriculum. Currently, a lot of school districts are using the pilot program to discover if the iPads are used successfully in education, and how to use the iPad’s to its true potential in the learning community.

Local Town Using Technology

Students at Burlington High School using their iPads to keep the learning community technologically engaged.

I’m from Billerica, Massachusetts, and the town over from me, Burlington, has brought iPads into their school system. This town located about 20 minutes from Boston. The school believes an engaged classroom involves keeping students up to date with the newest forms of technology, they don’t believe in turning the students off when they walk in the door. They are able to afford these devices by removing the big computer labs from their school and forgoing textbooks. They believe in project learning, conducting projects thru iPad’s using videos, documents, music clips, etc. They believe modest schools are making mistakes spending items on the same technology year after year, even when those items are no longer needed. They don’t need to put in the computer labs when they have the computer right at their fingertips thru iPads. Burlington High School’s apple profile is found here.
